How does injecting stem cells from abdominal fat change the treatment of osteoarthritis and what long-term effects can patients expect? Orthopaedics expert Markus Klingenberg explains how the body’s own fat can alleviate osteoarthritis.
An innovative approach to pain relief
Markus Klingenberg has been using the body’s own fat cells to treat osteoarthritis since 2017. These cells are rich in regenerative and connective tissue stem cells, which makes them particularly effective in therapy.
Combination with growth factors
Klingenberg combines the fat cells with growth factors from the patient’s blood. This method is usually performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia so that the patient can go home immediately afterwards.
Results of a recent study
In a study with over 214 knee patients, Klingenberg was able to show that the pain level had already decreased significantly after six weeks to two months. In addition to pain relief, the patients’ mobility and everyday activities also improved.
The success rate and outlook
Around 80 percent of treated patients experience a significant improvement in their symptoms, even with advanced osteoarthritis. Current studies carried out in collaboration with Charité show similarly positive results for hip osteoarthritis.
